From 15 to 19 June 2026, the SUSTAIN-E Summer School on Sustainable Electronics brought together Master’s students, PhD candidates, researchers and industry professionals in Grenoble for a week dedicated to the future of sustainable electronics. Co-organised by GreenChips-EDU and several European partners, including the SiNANO Academy, the programme combined scientific lectures, panel discussions and networking activities around the environmental challenges facing the semiconductor sector.

Throughout the week, participants explored a wide range of topics, including eco-design, circular electronics, critical raw materials, recycling strategies, resilient ICT systems, low-tech approaches and the latest advances in microelectronics and power electronics. The programme also addressed the geopolitical and regulatory aspects of building a more sustainable European semiconductor ecosystem.

As part of its contribution, SiNANO organised the final morning session, chaired by Francis Balestra, focusing on advanced technologies for energy-efficient electronics. The session featured:

• Alessandro Cresti (CROMA, Grenoble) – 2D Materials: Building Blocks for Sustainable Electronics
• Marco Pala (University of Udine) – Advanced Steep Slope Devices for Low-Power Electronics
• Emmanuel Ollier (CEA-Leti) – How Can Heterogeneous Integration Make Electronics More Sustainable?

These presentations highlighted promising approaches to reducing energy consumption through new materials, innovative devices and advanced integration technologies.

The Summer School was also a great opportunity to bring together participants from different backgrounds. Seeing students, early-career researchers, senior scientists and industry representatives exchanging ideas throughout the week demonstrated the value of this initiative in strengthening the European semiconductor community. The SiNANO Academy is proud to have contributed to this edition and thanks all speakers, organisers and partners for making the event such a success.
