Excellence in Nanoscience and Nanoelectronics

Within UCLouvain, Electrical Engineering department (ELEN) of Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Electronics, and Applied Mathematics (ICTEAM) is strongly involved in SINANO Institute activities since a very beginning of its creation.

ICTEAM/ELEN team of UCLouvain is a multidisciplinary team, involving device physicists, technologists and experimentalists, as well as analog, RF and digital circuit designers. It has been involved in the investigation of advanced electronics’ materials and devices since the 90s, from sub-micron SOI MOSFETs, towards ultra-thin films as FinFET and UTBB FDSOI, following the MOSFET scaling down to 14 nm and below presently. A large expertise has been developed on novel materials and devices processing on one side and advanced characterization as well as simulations and modeling on another side. Nowadays, our team is internationally recognized in the field of RFSOI, particularly for the characterization expertise on FDSOI structures, from substrate to device, toward the design and modelling.

Since 2020 our expertise has been extended toward THz, as well as spiking neuromorphic, and more recently, around AI accelerators. Furthermore, our team has acquired quite a unique expertise in the evaluation of the environmental impacts of ICT.

Advanced Research Infrastructure: WINFAB and WELCOME

UCLouvain also benefits from advanced technological infrastructures that support research, innovation, and collaboration with industry. Within the ICTEAM Institute, two technological platforms play a key role in nanoelectronics research and are closely involved in SiNANO activities: WINFAB, a cleanroom facility dedicated to micro- and nanofabrication, and WELCOME, a state-of-the-art platform for the electrical characterization of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. Together, these facilities provide researchers and industrial partners with the tools needed to develop, fabricate and evaluate next-generation electronic technologies.rthermore, our team has acquired quite a unique expertise in the evaluation of the environmental impacts of ICT.

WINFAB is a cleanroom-based microfabrication platform providing researchers with access to advanced equipment for semiconductor processing, nanofabrication, device prototyping, and characterization. The platform supports both academic research and industrial partnerships, enabling the development of next-generation electronic and photonic devices.
