European Strenghts and Gaps in Emerging Semiconductor Technologies – ICOS/SiNANO workshop – 11th September 2023, Lisbon, Portugal

The ESSDERC-ESSCIRC Conference was held in Lisbon on September 11-14. As each year since 2005, the SiNANO Institute participated with a workshop, this time organized jointly with the recently launched project “ICOS – International Coopeartion On Semiconductors”.

The workshop focused on the thematic European strenghts and gaps in emerging semiconductor technologies”.

International cooperation is key for speeding up technological innovation, and will allow to strengthen Europe’s position in global value chains in this area, which is one of the objectives of the EU Chips Act. This SINANO/ICOS workshop gathered an overview of the main EU and International activities in leading countries in the field of semiconductors, with the most promising technologies for possible international collaborations. In particular, the future technologies in advanced computation and future technologies for advanced functionalities, covering smart sensors, smart energy, energy harvesting for autonomous systems and semiconductor-based photonics were presented and discussed by renowned experts.

About ICOS:

The objective of the European project ICOS (International Cooperation On Semiconductors), coordinated by Grenoble INP and financed by the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon Europe program, is in line with the objectives, set out by the EU Chips Act., the EU Critical Raw Material Act as well as in the European Green Deal and Digital Agenda strategies.

ICOS aims to support the growth of the European semiconductor and semiconductor-based photonics industry through focused international research cooperation, and will play a significant role in helping Europe to regain sovereignty and leadership in the domain.

About ESSDERC-ESSCIRC 2023

The aim of ESSCIRC and ESSDERC is to provide an annual European forum for the presentation and discussion of recent advances in solid-state devices and circuits. The level of integration for system-on-chip design is rapidly increasing. This is made available by advances in semiconductor technology. Therefore, more than ever before, a deeper interaction among technologists, device experts, IC designers and system designers is necessary.”
